I bought this stuff at a surplus store - its sorta rubbery foamy - I'm not sure what it is. So far they havent come undone. The way I attatched it was to take an elatic and loop over the middle like I was making a fall. Then I split the things in half the other way and looped another elastic around (so now we have a + shape in elastics).
I put my hair in a bun (I dont have much) and attatched the elastics. Then you just do some creative knot tying, pull some pieces around the base to hide your hair and pin em down. Voila. Wierd foamee hair.
They are pretty rubbery so they grip each other nicely. I have been making 2 types of knots. one is just regular tyeing a not in a bunch. the other is a shoe lace knot (I guess) so I have cover any exposed hair and neither have come undone.
What where they for originally?
I have *NO* idea. I bought a box of em at a surplus store (they were all different lengths).
